Between cartography and art: Languages in Dialogue at the Museum of Geography
The Museum of Geography is open to contemporary art.
On one hand, it promotes projects such as the diffused exhibition Street geography. Drawing Cities for a Sustainable Future (2018), the Life(s) Love Landscape festival (2022 and 2023), or the performance Things I found in the viscera by Camilla Pontiggia (2024).
On the other hand, the museum’s heritage is being enriched with works by artists whose research intersects with the languages of geography and cartography. Of particular importance in this regard is the generous donation of maps made by the Military Geographical Institute (IGM) received from Claudio Pavan in 2022, also intended for educational and outreach initiatives. From this donation, the MAPPArti project was born, which since 2023 has been offering this heritage to the gaze and practices of contemporary art, promoting an annual artist residency and exhibition, and thus encouraging new important donations.
