From the distant past: the didactic collection of rocks

The Museum of Geography preserves a small didactic collection of rocks. The first group of 46 pieces was purchased between 1906 and 1907 by the young assistant of Physical Geography Ramiro Fabiani, future geologist, and paleontologist of fame at the Universities of Palermo and Rome. They represent one of the first didactical aids used by Geography professors of Padua in their courses. This original nucleus has grown over time and now counts 105 specimens, the last of which is a sample of verde del Cadore that arrived from the Museum of Natural History and Archaeology of Montebelluna. Partly forgotten over time, this collection has recently found a new and important use in the museum’s educational workshops.

The collection is accessible, although not exhibited along the museum path: those interested can arrange a visit with the museum staff.
